For more than 80 years, J.C. Robinson has built
a
reputation as a local company committed
to the community it serves.
Unlike many small heating, ventilation and air conditioning companies which
have been
bought up by national and international companies over the last 10
years, J.C. Robinson has chosen to remain independent, something co-owner Jim
Robinson says has allowed the company to remain responsive to local clients.
“When you call J.C. Robinson, you don’t play the call centre game with operators
located in another city,” says Mr. Robinson. “You speak to someone in our Ottawa
store. We pride ourselves on being responsible to our customers.”
That
commitment is backed by a skilled staff of 50, 30 service and installation
vehicles and a newly renovated showroom featuring furnaces, air conditioning
systems, burning gas fireplaces and stoves, air filters and humidifiers.
Now being run by the family’s fourth generation, along with general manager
William
Bellingham, J.C. Robinson has been specializing in York heating and air
conditioning products since the 1940s.
“They’ve always made reliable
products,” says Mr. Robinson. “York was established in the mid-1800s and has a
world-wide presence. Almost every major city in the world has an office.
“All our staff are trained from the factory and we carry a huge quantity of
parts. Most of the service work we do is on York products so we don’t have to
relearn every time we go into someone’s house. By specializing in one brand,
we’ve come to know their products very well.”
Included in York’s current
offering of heating products is their line of high-efficiency gas furnaces. Its
variable speed direct current fan motor uses about 20 per cent of the
electricity that a normal furnace fan would use. “That saves a lot of energy for
the home owner and it’s also quieter,” says Mr. Robinson.
The furnace
offers two levels of heat output, meaning the furnace can run on roughly half
the gas most of the time, only going to a full burn on especially cold winter
days and nights. While the energy saving compared to conventional furnaces is
only about two or three per cent, the two stage gas burner does offer more
comfort. “It stays on longer and puts out more even heat,” explains Mr.
Robinson. “The result is a more even temperature in the home.”
J.C.
Robinson and Sons’ other services include sales and installation of hot water
heaters and ventilation duct cleaning. They also offer comprehensive service
contracts for heating systems which include annual servicing and emergency
repairs.
In their showroom at 1726 Bank Street you’ll find a huge
selection of operational gas fireplaces from Vermont Castings. “New models are
coming out all the time and we install them in the showroom so you can see what
they look like when burning,” says Mr. Robinson. The showroom is open Monday
through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
